Review of Advanced and Specialist Digital Skills Shortages
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is leading a review focused on identifying the advanced and specialist digital skills gaps in the UK’s digital technology sector and wider economy. These are the skills required for specialist technology or digital roles such as IT business analysts, architects and system designers, programmers and software development professionals.
This work will provide a thorough understanding of the characteristics of the existing digital specialist workforce in the UK, current and future advanced and specialist digital skills needs in the UK, and will inform how to focus efforts on developing the UK digital skills pipeline.
Going forward, the findings will allow Government, industry, training providers and organisations with an interest in this area to consider policies and interventions that can help address these needs and to ensure the skills pipeline is responding to the digital skills required in the labour market in the short term and long term.
How the research is being conducted
DCMS has appointed Pye Tait Consulting to independently carry out the research.
The research will be conducted in two phases:
- An extensive literature review and analysis of existing data sources which is likely to provide a ‘partial’ picture; and
- New, primary research to test the desk-based analysis, fill specific data gaps and/or update existing data to answer our research questions.
How to take part
The primary research will include in-depth telephone interviews with employers and stakeholders, an online survey of employers (open for responses now), followed by round-table discussion forums.
