Evaluation & Reviews
Pye Tait Consulting has a strong track record of carrying out formative, summative, process and impact evaluations, both at strategic and programme levels. We also have strong expertise and experience in undertaking full-scale reviews of policies, initiatives, systems and frameworks. Just a few examples of our multi-method projects include process and impact evaluations of the government-owned Cyber Essentials (CE) scheme for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT); a wide-ranging review of doctoral training and skills for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC); and a review of investment funding for the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
Skills & Training Research
Pye Tait Consulting has the expertise and experience to develop and consult on skills, careers and training at all levels. We have undertaken detailed studies relating to hard-to-fill vacancies, skills shortages and skills gaps, leading to strategic or tactical recommendations to suit the needs of a wide range of sectors and businesses. We have in-depth knowledge of the English/Welsh and Scottish qualification systems, having designed, developed and reviewed a wide range of units and qualifications; and designed and developed “product surround” (e.g. assessment specifications, tutor guidance and question banks). Our work has included a study of skills transferability for the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB); research for the Gatsby Charitable Foundation into the views of secondary school and college leaders on the impact of COVID-19 on careers guidance; and an assessment of the Level 3 Free Courses for Jobs offer, part of the Lifetime Skills Guarantee, commissioned by the Department for Education.
Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) & Modelling
The study, research, statistical analysis and testing of labour market intelligence has been a core capability of Pye Tait Consulting for over 25 years. We have conducted numerous labour market analyses to enable government bodies, stakeholders and other organisations to assess economic and employment trends, make informed decisions about policy, and shape interventions in relation to skills shortages, skills gaps and career pathway planning. To that end, we have recently modelled 15-year projections for workforces as varied as nuclear, renewable energy and heritage construction. Lately we have worked on an assessment of the size and workforce demography of the electrotechnical sector including a summary of the challenges and opportunities that it faces; a report for the Suffolk Growth Partnership setting out the construction and engineering workforce required to deliver future regional infrastructure projects; and investigated the over 50s labour market for the UK construction industry.
Consultation Analysis
A consultation is a market research investigation on issues of major public importance. Consultations produce large amounts of qualitative (and some quantitative) data that require skilled analysis. Pye Tait Consulting has successfully conducted a great many high-profile consultation analyses at a national level and to tight timescales, all of which require accurate data cleaning, qualitative and quantitative analysis of thousands of responses, and the creation of comprehensive coding frameworks. Our implementation is meticulous and sensitive, and our reports thoughtful and detailed. Recent examples include work for the Office of Students on its future approach to regulating equality of opportunity in English higher education; a consultation analysis report of behalf of the Scottish Government into views on key aspects of a new national litter strategy; and the analysis of a nationwide consultation on post-registration nursing standards for the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Business, Policy & Strategy
Since we began studying policy issues in 1991, we have worked with some of the UK’s most prestigious organisations on a wide range of investigative, strategic, feasibility-oriented, and policy-directed projects, all requiring careful foresight, modelling, and databasing skills. Our work not only entails high quality planning and organisation, but also careful, insightful thought into what may have happened and what might be done to improve and enhance things in the future. In such studies, our 30-plus years of experience are critical to delivering balanced and effective policy. Illustrations of this capability include several investigative studies into aspects of building regulations compliance on behalf of the Scottish Government; multiple waves of stakeholder engagement research and analysis for the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); and databasing/heat mapping of export sector activity in the Midlands on behalf of the Department for International Trade (DIT).
